The Auckland Botanic Gardens opened in 1982 in a new era when botanic gardens have been increasingly recognised as being important to building an awareness of the human relationship to nature and to protect the wealth of plants.

During the 19th and 20th century municipal and civic gardens were created throughout Europe and the British Commonwealth as pleasure gardens. In the 1700's plants were being brought back to Europe as trophies from distant lands, and these were displayed in the private estates of wealthy patrons.

This was the era of European colonialism which was the means by which ideas, knowledge, economy and politics were used to influence other countries and peoples while commandeering their land, labour and resources.

The collection of figurines was initially inspired by Chatwin’s 1988 novel Utz. the story of a compulsive art collector of over 1000 Meissen figurines crammed into his two-room Prague flat. He becomes a prisoner of his collection.

The electronic feeder released seed three times a day via an auger mechanism which drove the seed out.

We also made twelve single bird feeders which stand on 2m copper tube. Available for purchase
